Joe Christensen, Star Tribune: "Slowey needed 106 pitches to get through seven innings. He was making his first start since Aug. 5, when he threw a season-high 114 pitches in a start at Tampa Bay. He missed his next scheduled start — last Wednesday at Chicago — because of elbow tendinitis.
"'I'm not going to let him throw 125-130 pitches; it's just not going to happen," Gardenhire said. "If he went back out for one more inning, he'd probably be around 115-120 and be done anyway. There's no way he was going to finish. He's got too big of a career ahead of him.'"

odds were still against Slowey actually completing the no-hitter. Leave him in and there's a strong chance he ends up allowing a hit on, say, his 127th pitch, in which case the Twins would've gone from risking his health for a minimal reward to risking his health for zero reward."
Twinkie Talk: "Yes, I would have loved to see Slowey throw a no-hitter. And yes, I was upset when Jon Rauch(notes) promptly allowed back-to-back doubles to spoil both the no-no and the shut out. But, as a fan, I want to see my team dominate for a long time, not just one game in August. The Twins will need Slowey to pitch well during the stretch run and into October. They cannot risk losing him to injury just so he can get his name in the history books."
Seth Speaks: "Now, as much as I loved the decision to remove Slowey from the game, I think that there was also some obligation to continue going after the no-hitter. Again, that's not a big deal to the big picture, but it is a nice event. Bringing in Jon Rauch is the part of the decision-making that I would question. I would have wanted him to go to Jesse Crain(notes) at that time. Of course, hindsight is always 20-20. Crain could have come in and given up a hit too, but I'll take my chances."
