Fifteen players in Major League Baseball history have hit four home runs in a game, with none surpassing that total. Twelve players have driven in 10 runs or more in a single game, with Mark Whiten and Jim Bottomley sharing the record at 12.
Now, they can all look up at Austin Glorius.
Glorius, a senior first baseman at Windermere Prep in Orlando, tied a pair of national high school records on Thursday night by swatting five home runs and amassing 17 RBIs in a 38-0 five-inning win over rival Florida high school Faith Christian, according to a report by the Orlando Sentinel. The young slugger would have broken the all-time RBI mark, but his 18th RBI of the game was nullified when a runner was called out for missing a base on Glorius' fifth and final home run of the night.
"I was just trying to hit the ball hard," Glorius told the Sentinel. "There's no other feeling like it.''
Glorius began the game with a walk, then belted a three-run home run in the first inning after Windermere Prep batted around. He followed that up with a grand slam and two-run double in the second, another grand slam in the third and a pair of two-run homers, one in the fourth and one in the fifth, on which Glorius' teammate committed his baserunning miscue.
"I've never seen it before,'' Windermere Prep coach Gil Morales told the Sentinel. "When they appealed [for not touching the base], I said, 'Watch that be the difference maker between him setting a national record or not.' Saying that, it was still an amazing feat.''
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, five other players have hit five homers in a game, the last one coming in Nevada in 2009. Georgia high school player Nathan Williams set the RBI mark with 17 in 1948.
Former St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Jim Bottomley set the all-time Major League single-game RBI mark of 12 in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 16, 1924. Whiten equaled Bottomley's mark against the Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 7, 1993, while also going deep four times, also as a Cardinal.
Boston Beaneaters second baseman Bobby Lowe was the first big leaguer to swat four home runs in a game, against Cincinnati on May 30, 1894. The most recent player to match the mark was then-Blue Jays first baseman Carlos Delgado, against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sept. 25, 2003. Ed Delahanty, Lou Gehrig, Chuck Klein, Pat Seerey, Gil Hodges, Joe Adcock, Rocky Colavito, Willie Mays, Mike Schmidt, Bob Horner, Whiten, Mike Cameron and Shawn Green have also accomplished the feat.
