Russia and
Austria both have 6 points. With a draw, both of them will make 7 points.
Now, in all the other groups, only a single team can finish 3rd with 7 points, that team is Belarus. But, in order for Belarus to finish 3rd, they need to lose in Slovenia in the last match.
For the moment, Belarus have a 7+ goal difference. Russia has 16+,
Austria 7 +. But if Belarus loses in Slovenia they will have less than 7 at goal difference, with a draw in the match
Austria-Russia the Russians will finish second, because in the first match, Russia beat
Austria by 7 goals. So this means that
Austria will finish 3rd, but if Belarus loses, they will have a better goal difference so
Austria will qualify from the 3rd spot.
Regardless of what happens in Slovenia in the match between Belarus and Slovenia, with a draw, Russia and
Austria will go together at the European
Championship.
Now I'm asking myself the next thing : if you know that with a draw you and your oppoents qualify to the final stage, why risk and try to win ? If you try to win, you could lose and with a loss you will stay at home. But if you make a draw, then you with your opponents will qualify together.
This reminds me of the
football match between Sweden and Denmark back at Euro 2004, similar case, with a draw, both of them will qualify. It finished 2-2.
Several days ago, at the U21 European Championshi in Israel, Norway and
Italy played a 1-1 draw, both of the qualified together in the next stage.
So, why would things be different in
handball ? Yes, the chanches for a draw are less likely to happen like in a
football match, but regarding the situation in my opinion I really see a draw here."
