Southamerican Championship 2010 Preview

The warm city of Neiva, 200 Km at the South of Bogot in Colombia, open its doors to receive the eight National Teams to play the 44 edition of the Southamerican Championship, the Tournament maybe will not have all the superstars that shines in the NBA and Europe, but will be a nice chance to see the young talent of the continent.

Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, and Uruguay arrives as main favourites, and Colombia, Chile, Paraguay and Ecuador comes to show his development.

Venezuela and Argentina looks as the bigger favourites after the Super 4 played in Venezuela, the Nestor Salazar team will have Hector Pepito Romero as its leader, but David Cubillan, coming after his career at Marquette will be another important player, Venezuela has this time a big chance to get another Southamerican Championship.

Argentina comes with a young team , most of it members of Penarol, Juan Cantero the poin guard of Penarol will be the team guide, while Roman Gonzalez and Juan Gutierrez will put the experience, Argentina again will show the style of play that bring them international success.

Brazil main figure will be its coach Ruben Magnano, but guys like Murilo Becker, Joaa Batista and Duda can put the yellow team up in the games, the team however is not in its best shape yet.

Uruguay bet for the power of Esteban Batista in the pain, and as usual his accuracy beyond the arc, this time Martin oso Osimani and Aguiar , will lead the offensive, but for sure the team will miss lots Leandro Garca Morales.

In the group of the Challengers, Colombia looks in a better shape, the coach team have the best roster in many years, Edgar Moreno, Stalin Ortiz and Enielsen Guvara will lead the locals.

Chile comes with a short roster, and it will its main weak point, but they still can get good help from its pivot Patricio patoBriones.

Paraguay comes with no preparation, and leaded by the veteran guard Javier Martinez, but in Pitalitos friendly tournament did not show a good level.

Ecuador looks far from the rest of the teams, and comes to get experience for its young players.

The cross in the second round can put Venezuela and Argentina in the final, but Brazil and Uruguay will be hard to beat, and Colombia have this time a chance to surprise at home.

The seriously threatened in the last period (18-9), but were not able to make a turn. In Day Three in Neiva, Paraguay will meet Brazil. Chile will take on Uruguay.

▶ Group B
Argentina - Ecuador 107-43
Argentina destroyed Ecuador for the first win in Neiva. Argentineans failed against Venezuela in Day One, but despite that defeat they still have a nice chance to reach the Semifinals. On the other side, Ecuador dropped to 0-2 with no chance to make it to the next stage. Carlos Schattmann (194-G-87) top-scored in Argentina with 19 points and he handed out 9 assists beside that. Federico Aguerre (203-F/C-88) collected 18 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. He was the MVP of this meeting with valuation 30. Alejandro Alloatti (203-F/C-84) also helped with 18 pts (7 rebs). In Ecuador, Jose Vicente Diaz (196-F-75) had 11 points. He was their only player with double-digits in scoring. Argentina dominated from the start of this game. Carlos Schattmann and his teammates collected 19-12 in the first quarter and they were just warming up. They destroyed Ecuador in Q2 with 29-8 and question about the winner was resolved. Second half was juts the formality and the only question was how big difference it will be at the end. Argentina made 27-15 in third and huge 32-8 in the last quarter for the final 107-43 blowout. In the last day of Preliminary Round in Neiva, Argentina will play against the hosts (Colombia). Ecuador will take on Venezuela.

Colombia - Venezuela 84-83 OT
Second win for the host of South American Championship 2010. Colombians grabbed an overtime win against Venezuela to stay alone on the first place in Group B with the perfect 2-0 record. Before that, Venezuela shined in Q1 as they made excellent 19-29 lead. The hosts immediately woke up and replied with 19-12 for rest of the first half. Colombia was better in third frame as well (24-21) so everything was open again. Last frame was totally leveled (14-14) and teams went to overtime, where Colombia made tiny 8-7. In Day Three, Colombia will take on Argentina. Venezuela will meet Ecuador.

trzeci dzień turnieju:

▶ Group A
Brazil - Paraguay 93-81
Brazil finished Preliminary Round in Neiva with the perfect 3-0 record. They demonstrated great performance so far at this event and will play against Venezuela in the Semifinals. Paraguay failed to reach the next stage as they had 2-1 record and finished as No.3 in this group. Murilo da Rosa (210-C/F-83, agency: Arik Krayn Services) paced the winners with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Jonathan Tavernari (197-G/F-87) had 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Fulvio de Assis (187-G-81) added 15 pts and 5 rebs. Eduardo Machado (195-G-82) netted 14 points. In Paraguay, Javier Martinez (189-G-78) was the leading player with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Guillermo Araujo (204-C-82) (14 rebs) and Bruno Zanotti (197-F-82, college: Merrimack) had 16 points each. Second quarter was the crucial one in this game. Before that, Brazil made tiny 24-23 in the first ten minutes. Murilo da Rosa and his teammates intensified defense after that limiting Paraguay to 16 pts in the second frame, while they drained 25 on the other side. It means that Brazil held nice 10-point lead at the half time. Both teams were good offensively in Q3, but still Brazil was the one who ended with 26-23. They had no troubles to keep the safe distance in the last ten minutes and to register third straight win in Neiva. Semifinals, well as the first Classification Games for 5th to 8th place, are scheduled for Friday.

Chile - Uruguay 64-75
Uruguay was better than Chile in crucial game and advanced to Semifinals in Neiva. With this win, Uruguay finished as No.2 in Group A with 2-1 record and will meet Argentina in the Semis. Chile ended Preliminary Round winless and will be transferred to Classification Games for 5th to 8th place. Fernando Martinez (170-G-79) stepped up for the winners with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Joaquin Izuibejeres (184-G-82) had 14 points and 5 boards, while Esteban Batista (208-F/C-83) added 13 pts and 9 rebs. In Chile, Patricio Briones (213-C-72, college: Dade CC) shined with 19 points and 8 boards. Franco Morales (179-G-92) and Rodrigo Espinoza (183-G-81, agency: Players Group) netted 13 and 11 points respectively. Chile was slightly better team at the beginning as they made 18-16 lead in the first ten minutes. Patricio Briones and his teammates took full control on Uruguayans for rest of the first half and increased their advantage to plus 8 points (35-27 HT). At that time it seemed that Chile will be able to grab the first win in Neiva, but Uruguayans had other thoughts. They blasted Chile with 15-26 after the breather and were looking great. In the last quarter there was only one team playing on the court and it was Uruguay again. They created 14-22 in these ten minutes for nice 64-75 win at the end. Championship continues on Saturday.

▶ Group B
Colombia - Argentina 63-70
Argentina started with defeat in Neiva, but despite that fact they managed to end Preliminary Round as the top-ranked team of Group B. Argentineans were too strong for Colombia on Wednesday evening jumping to 2-1 record. The hosts of this event, as well as Venezuela, have the same numbers but Argentina is No.1, Venezuela No.2 and Colombia is N.3. As a reminder, just two best teams from this pool will go to Semifinals, so Colombia will continue in Classification Round for 5th to 8th place. Leonardo Mainoldi (204-F-85) stepped up for Argentina with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Juan Gutierrez (205-F/C-83) has 12 points and 11 boards, while Roman Gonzalez (211-C-78) (11 rebs) and Matias Sandes (201-F/G-84) (6 rebs, 5 as) added 10 points each. For the home side, Stalin Ortiz (191-G-81, college: Valparaiso) shined with 23 points. Edgar Moreno (191-G-81, college: UTEP) had 17 pts, 6 boards and 5 assists. Colombia started this game with tiny 15-13 lead. Argentineans woke up immediately after that and replied with 11-19 for rest of the first half. After the breather, Leonardo Mainoldi and his teammates continued in the same rhythm and thanks to great offense ended Q3 with 19-23 for double-digit lead before the last ten minutes. Colombia didn't give up and they made 18-15 in Q4, but that was not enough to avoid third place in Group B. Championship continues on Saturday. Argentina will meet Uruguay in the Semifinals, while Colombia will meet Chile in CR.

Venezuela - Ecuador 104-43
Venezuela advanced to Semifinals as No.2 of Group B and will play against Brazil. Venezuelans destroyed Ecuador in the last day of Preliminary Round heading to next stage with huge self-confidence. On the other side, Ecuador ended this phase winless. They will continue in Classification Games for 5th to 8th place. In the first game Ecuador will meet Paraguay. Gregory Vargas (182-G-86, agency: DR. Carlos Sifuentes) came up with 17 points and 5 rebounds in victory. Hector Romero (202-F-80, college: New Orleans) (6 rebs), Jesus Centeno (190-G-85, agency: DR. Carlos Sifuentes) and Jesus Urbina (201-F-84, agency: Liman Sports, college: George Mason) helped with 14 points each. In defeat, Eduard Caicedo (196-C-90) collected 13 points and 7 rebounds. They didn't have any other player with double-digits in scoring. Everything was clear in just ten minutes. Venezuela players exploded in the first quarter ending it with huge 25-5 lead. It was a clear signal that Ecuador will not have a chance in this meeting and the only question was how big difference it will be at the end. Second frame ended 26-10 for Venezuela, who was 51-15 up at the half time. Nothing has changed after that as Venezuela finished Q3 with 24-14 and the last one with 29-14 for the final 104-43 blowout. Championship in Neiva continues on Saturday.
